At a time when the country tentatively is coming to terms with different ways of interacting as a group, it’s good news that National Heritage Week has a number of events arranged across the county. Running from tomorrow Saturday August 15 to Sunday, August 23, the scaled-down programme has a number of interesting offerings over the course of the nine days. The restrictions on international travel mean that, in many instances, people are looking to the wonders that are on their own door step.
National Heritage Week highlights much of the marvels that may otherwise be overlooked. Most projects are standalone – eg an exhibition of photographs or material. Many of the events are free of charge. Cavan will be presenting some unique events to preserve and promote our natural, built and cultural heritage; while at the same time complying with social distancing restrictions.

My husband and I stayed in this B and B on 22nd June as we were attending a wedding in the nearby Slieve Russell hotel and what a wonderful stay it was! We were welcomed warmly by Rosaleen upon arrival who offered us tea and homemade bread and scones. She then organised transportation to the wedding. The room was clean, spacious and comfortable. We were offered breakfast at a time that suited us which was great especially after a late night at the wedding.
The breakfast itself was made by Rosaleen and was delicious. Rosaleen made this a home away from home and I would definitely recommend this B and B for anyone visiting the area. I stayed in Carnagh House last night and the night before and I can honestly say Rosaleen is one of the loveliest women I’ve ever met. She welcomed me warmly and then gave me a lift to my friends who were in the pub down the road!
She also washed some of my clothes! I was working on a short film nearby and we had a long final day of shooting in miserably bad weather so when I arrived back after wrap to find my clean clothes laid out in my room it made my day. Thank you so much Roseleen for your lovely accommodation and great banter!

The area was settled at an early date, as evidenced by the double-court tomb in the town dating from c. The ford would have been a logical place to erect a settlement and it probably dates from the time of the court tomb. The earliest inhabitants were hunter-gatherers rather than farmers. They lived by fishing, hunting wild game and foraging for berries and nuts.
